As a parent, it’s easy to get caught up in your feelings when the time comes for your child to leave home for school. This is even more challenging when they have to study abroad. Despite how you may feel about your children leaving, it is important to remember it isn’t an easy process for them too. Studying abroad has become more popular with time. Statistics show that in 2018, over 34,000 students chose to attend school in another country, whether short-term or for the entire period. However, your child may still need your help getting ready for the journey ahead. Below are some tips you can use to help your child prepare.

  • Help them with research

There are a lot of things that you and your child would have to research before their big trip. For example, you must research the types of accommodation available to select one your child would prefer. So, if your child were going for a short while, it would be better to check out short term student accommodation options from their school or within the community.

You must also research the area they would be living in to know more about the basic amenities available, security, and other important things. Don’t forget to look into the standard of living and help your child budget accordingly.

  • Get their health checked

Before your child embarks on their educational journey abroad, it is vital to take them to the doctor. A routine checkup evaluates their current health and identifies any hidden conditions. If your child has any medical conditions, you must also ensure that you stock up on their medications. Prepare a small first-aid box with their prescriptions and other over-the-counter medications. Give them a copy of their prescription in case they need it.

It is also advisable to ensure your child receives various vaccinations depending on the requirements of the school or country they are going to study in. You must do this task months before their travel date so that they are all set and prepared when the time comes for them to leave.

  • Encourage open communication

Children tend to hide many of their problems at school and with friends from adults, especially their parents. They do this for many reasons, but mostly because they do not want to be embarrassed or ashamed. If you’ve had such a history with your child, now might be the best time to encourage them to open up about how they feel about studying abroad.

Having any issues while away from home can make the situation worse. You will not be there physically to provide that emotional support. Let them know that you are only a phone call away and that every problem they encounter will have a solution. Your child will be more psychologically prepared to handle any issues knowing that they have a solid team behind them.

Studying abroad is a wonderful opportunity for children, as it lets them explore a new location and helps them develop into well-rounded people. It’s also a scary time for parents and children, so ensure that you are there for them every step.
