Everybody can make a difference when it comes to protecting the environment. With the growing concerns about climate change, saving the planet is no longer an option but a necessity. Indeed, larger corporations and industrialisation are the biggest climate change contributors. However, a UK study has shown that 40% of emissions come from households, making it a good idea for your family to make an effort to protect the environment. Below are some easy ways your family can be more eco-conscious to reduce your impact on climate change.

  • Plan ahead

A recent UN study suggests that approximately one-third of global food production is lost or thrown away as waste, which is bad for the environment. Having a meal plan can reduce any guesswork when grocery shopping so that you won’t buy any food supplies you don’t need. This way, you waste less food. You can also make the most of your seasonal extras by freezing or preserving vegetables in vinegar, marinades, oils and ketchup. For instance, you can make the passata all year long by blitzing and freezing your surplus tomatoes in containers. This can cut your energy spent on cooking and shopping and reduce how much food you throw away and the money that comes with it.

  • Use eco-friendly cleaning products

Several mainstream cleaning products contain ingredients that are harmful to the environment. These include synthetic ingredients such as Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), Ammonia, Chlorine bleach, Petroleum Solvents, etc. Consider swapping them for eco-friendly ones that do not affect the ecosystem. Vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice are common household items you can use for cleaning. There are also manufactured options that don’t include harmful components.

  • Alternative energy

Solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy, and biomass are common sources of green energy. This renewable energy is cleaner and environmentally friendly than energy derived from burning fossil fuels. Additionally, green energy is mostly naturally replenished. For example, solar panels with battery storage take power from the sun and store some for later use. Its installation also does not require any drilling and mining activities that can damage ecosystems. This is beneficial for the environment and the health of organisms that depend on these ecosystems for survival.

  • Reduce your packaging

Packaging is a major component of the waste the world produces. Therefore, it is advisable to take your containers when shopping for groceries in the marketplaces and stores. Additionally, it would be best to buy recyclable or reusable packaging items if you can’t avoid them altogether. Today, many forward-thinking businesses are going green to sustain the planet. Reusing and recycling your packaging will go a long way toward reducing waste and packaging supplies in landfills and water bodies.

The home plays a key role in minimising the impact of climate change. Your family can do this by becoming more conscious about minimising your carbon footprint and conserving natural resources. While the above list isn’t exhaustive, it should get you started on making your home more environmentally friendly.
