Smelly Classmates

General

10 Feb

Every week I go to an adult education class.  Most of the class are regulars, but each term there are some new people and some of them go on to become regulars too.  Recently, someone joined the class and that seemed fine at first, until he sat by me for the first time.

To be blunt he smelt.  It wasn’t body odour in the usual sense of someone being a bit sweaty, but this person smelt of wee.  Last week it was rather overpowering and actually made me feel sick.  This week the man sat by me again and whilst it wasn’t as bad as the previous week, it was still pretty bad.  I’ve noticed that his clothes are quite stained.  In fact, it seems odd as they are quite smart clothes.  Maybe he’s fallen on hard times and is still wearing his suit from better times.

To be honest, I wouldn’t be that worried about the stained clothes if he didn’t smell, but I do wonder if his personal hygiene isn’t what it should be.  Part of me wonders if I am being too judgemental.  Maybe he has some sort of bladder problem.  Maybe he has some mental health issues and hasn’t been taking care of himself properly. It’s a shame though because he seems like a nice man otherwise, but I don’t think I can face sitting next to him again.  I don’t feel I want to get into a conversation about the problem either with him or the teacher, but I don’t want to sit near him again.  What would you do?
