As a parent, you are responsible for keeping your child safe from harm. This includes ensuring that they are safe in their own home. You can do many things to make your home child safe, and we will discuss six of the most important ones here. Remember that this is not an exhaustive list, but it will get you on the right track.

1)Electrical Safety

One of the most common hazards in the home is electricity. Exposed electrical outlets and cords are a shock and fire hazard. Be sure to cover all exposed outlets with child proof covers and keep cords out of reach of children. If possible, opt for infrared heater panels instead of electric heaters, as they pose no risk of electrical shocks. Use infrared heater panels to keep your home warm and comfortable without worrying about your child’s safety.

2)Poisonous Substances

Many common household items are poisonous if ingested by children. For example, cleaning products, medications, and even some plants can be deadly if consumed. Be sure to keep all poisonous substances out of reach of children and preferably locked away in a cupboard or cabinet. If you have young children in the home, installing childproof locks on all cabinets and doors is also a good idea.

3)Falls

Falls are one of the most common injuries in children. They can occur from heights, downstairs, or slipping on a wet floor. To prevent falls, childproof your home by installing gates at the top and bottom of stairs and placing non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower. In addition, always supervise children when they are near potential fall hazards.

4)Fire Safety

Fire safety is another essential aspect of childproofing your home. Be sure to have working smoke detectors on every level of your home, and test them monthly. Keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location, and teach your children how to use it. Have a plan for what to do if there is a fire, and practice it with your family regularly.

5)Choking Hazards

Many everyday household items can pose a choking hazard to young children. Keep small objects out of reach, and dispose of any packaging or wrappers properly. Cut food into small pieces, and never leave a child unattended while eating. Be aware of any toys with small parts that could come off, and avoid giving them to children under three.

6)Water Safety

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children, so water safety is essential. Be sure to install a fence around any pools or hot tubs in your yard, and never leave a child unattended near water. Keep baths short and supervised, and teach your children how to swim as early as possible. In addition, always have life jackets on hand when you are near bodies of water, even if your children know how to swim.

Following these simple tips can make your home much safer for your children. Remember that this is not an exhaustive list, but it is an excellent place to start. Keeping your child safe should be your top priority, so take the necessary steps to ensure their safety today.
