When The Holidays Don’t Go To Plan

We have been looking forward to the holidays for ages.  My son was finding the last few weeks of term time a strain – you know that summer term is far too long.  It always amazes me when the government talks about making school term times longer.  I do wonder if politicians have any grip on the realities of life.  I think we could easily lose a week or two off each term and have more holidays.  No learning time would be lost because you could stop all that film watching, etc.  that seems to go on for the last week.  Anyway, that wasn’t what I wanted to talk about.

For the holidays I had a plan.  It was going to be 2 or 3 bigger days a week where we meet up with friends or go on a day trip, with a couple of days mostly at home maybe going to the park or the local shops or something.  Week one went a bit like that.  Week two has been a right off pretty much.  I thought J would bounce back pretty quickly once school finished and would be up for some fun and adventures.  It hasn’t been that way though.

This week we haven’t been much more than a mile from home.  We have been out every day, but it has been a walk to the local shops for a quite top up shop or a stroll to the dentists.  Two days we have been in the car to two different libraries.  J has read for England back home.  He’s into double figures I think for books he’s read this week.  He’s fallen asleep during the day and has had a poor appetite, but he hasn’t needed calpol. I’m hoping it clears up soon, but I haven’t taken him to the doctor yet because he hasn’t been complaining about being ill, but I’m starting to think maybe I should do.
