Five Ways To Improve Allergies In Your Household

Health

14 Sep

For many people, allergies are a seasonal nuisance. But for others, they’re a year-round battle. If you’re one of the latter, you may feel like you’ve tried everything to get your allergies under control, but nothing seems to work. Allergies can be caused by various things, including dust mites, mould, pet dander, and pollen. And while you can’t always control what’s in the air outside, there are steps you can take to reduce allergens in your home and make your indoor environment more allergy-friendly. Here are five ways to improve allergies in your household:

1) Keep Your Home Clean And Dust-Free.

Dust mites are tiny creatures that thrive in dusty environments. They’re a leading cause of indoor allergies, and they can be found in every home, even homes that are meticulously clean. To reduce dust mites in your home, vacuum regularly with a powerful vacuum cleaner and wash all bedding in hot water every week. If possible, avoid carpeting altogether as it can be difficult to keep clean.

2) Get Rid Of Mould.

Mould loves damp places, which means it can often be found in basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Mould spores can cause respiratory problems and exacerbate existing allergies. To get rid of mould, first, identify all the areas in your home where mould is present. Once you’ve done that, clean these areas with a solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water. Be sure to wear gloves and a mask when cleaning mould, as it can be hazardous to your health if inhaled.

3) Keep Pets Out Of The Bedroom.

Pet dander is another common allergen that can trigger or worsen asthma and allergy symptoms. If you have pets, limit their access to bedrooms and other living areas where people spend a lot of time so they don’t track dander throughout the house. Be sure to vacuum pet hair from carpets and upholstery regularly as well. Additionally, bathe your pets or send them to a groomer once a week to help reduce the amount of dander they shed in your home.

4) Invest In An Air Purifier.

Air purifiers work by circulating air through a filter that traps dust, pollen, and other allergens, purifying the air as it circulates back into the room. This can help reduce allergy symptoms both indoors and out by keeping pollen and other outdoor allergens from entering your home. When shopping for an air purifier, look for one with a high CADR rating. The CADR (clean air delivery rate) is a measure of how effective an air purifier is at reducing particulate matter in the air.

5) Have Your Home Inspected.

Another way that you can control allergies is to have your home inspected for pests or other health hazards. For example, asbestos surveys, lead-based paint testing, and pest inspections can all help you identify potential allergens in your home so you can take steps to remove them. Ensuring your home is free of these allergens can go a long way in reducing your allergy symptoms.

While there’s no surefire way to eliminate all allergens from your home, following these tips can help reduce the amount of allergens present and make your indoor environment more allergy-friendly.
